A glimpse into what it is like to live in our home just this moment.

when you are so over your big brother's basketball season

Intentional Outdoor Hours: 13 hours  (of 1000)
We snagged a few hours on Monday which was beautiful (sunny and 60 degrees!) Aunt Kitty picked the babies up early from daycare and folded 2 loads of laundry for me (thank you!!) and then stayed late into the evening to play with the kids outside on the trampoline (a weird game they call wormy wormy which had us all cracking up!) Violet got some practice on her bike without training wheels (she says "without triangles") and did so well.  The big kids took a bike ride through the neighborhood and now we are all officially ready for spring - bye winter, we are done with you!

Reading Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson and I started Nyxia by Scott Reintgen after a student returned it to my bookshelf and gushed about how much he enjoyed it. I was like, "okay, fine! I'll read it!" (hah) It is another YA project Lit book and if I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times, Project Lit did such an incredible job choosing books for their list. Amazing and diverse characters and plots. Every book I've read this year that has been on their list I have enjoyed and left me with a lot to reflect and think about. They have a high school and middle school list that you can check out here if you have big kids who are in need of something to read.

Officially certified in CPR after my Act 80 day training on Monday!

Keeping tabs on the babe with two non-stress tests this week and regular check up. All seems to be going well. I had my last ultrasound scheduled for 37 weeks to see what we may need to do at that point if the placenta is still too low-lying and the cord is still in the way. The kids are getting really anxious to meet the little fella. Rusty gives my belly hugs every day and says, "I love my wittle brudder" and Grey asks regularly if the baby is kicking or moving so he can feel/watch. Gem has been very helpful around the house so that I can rest and has admitted that she's worried I'll be hurt or sick when the baby is born. Violet is very snuggly and attention seeking these days, but will randomly walk over to me and hug or pat my belly silently. B just keeps apologizing (hah!) and saying thank you for allowing my body to stretch to this size and deal with the heartburn and back ache so we can have another human in our family. All my students are like, "Senora, do you just forget what happens? because you've done this four times before and here you are again! how? why?" and my only answer for them and for anyone is - no you don't forget (entirely), but right at this moment of enormous belly, wishing my body was my own again, braxton hicks, constant heartburn, constipation, and insomnia - the only thing that justifies it all is that loose skinned neck that smells like heaven. So...?

Smiling at the photos and updates B sent while Violet completed her Kinder testing this week. She did a great job and was very excited to meet the teachers and play all the different stations. Little peanut is growing up!

Getting a visit from the tooth fairy! Violet pulled out her first tooth all on her own - after wiggling it for the last two weeks! She refused to let anyone pull it and just kept at it until it was so loose it practically just slipped out with the slightest pull. She was so proud!

Clearing the schedule on all the things. Like many other states, we went into social distancing mode on Friday afternoon. Greyson's basketball tournament in Pittsburgh this weekend - cancelled. Brandon's conference next week in Pittsburgh - cancelled. Baseball practices - cancelled. Birthday party at the skating rink this weekend - cancelled. Sunday school - cancelled. At 35+ weeks pregnant, maternity leave looming, and my college research paper due in 2 weeks - I'm not going to complain about having the schedule wiped fully clean, but it does feel scary to live through a time that this is happening on such a huge scale. I'm hoping to make the most of it at home and really give our family an opportunity to reset and take a breath. We have been go-go-go since the start of this year, and if we are going to be forced into a slow down, then we are going to milk it for everything it is worth.

Giving the green light to nightly kid campouts during the isolation. The kids went full summer mode and immediately started chanting, "Who's sleeping downstairs tonight?" which the answer to that by any other child in the house is "Me! Me! Me! Me!"

Praying for our family, friends, neighbors, and all of those that have real concerns about this sickness affecting them in a dangerous way. We know plenty of people who fit the criteria for more severe reactions: grandparents & great grandparents, asthmatics, those recovering from surgery or illnesses. We, our family, should be fine even if/when we get it (I've done plenty of studying up on newborns, and even he should be okay if born now), but I'm most concerned about those we love that might now be. Please create space physically, but remain close with phone calls, video chats, and snail mail. This is a very weird time and we will need one another to each do our part in the coming weeks.

College'ing by submitting my draft research paper and receiving really valuable feedback that will help me keep working. It's due on April 5th, so between now and then I'll be reading articles, making corrections, and continuing to write the rest of the paper!

Spring sporting with an indoor baseball practice and a field clean up day and our weekly BB gun league shoot for Grey and Gem. It's Gemma's first year and she's doing great! As of now, we are on hold until further notice for baseball - so it will be playing catch in the backyard for at least the next two weeks.

Teaching the last chapters of Brandon Brown in Sp1 and the last chapters of Esperanza in Sp2. We finished a book each this week in two different levels - yay! Sp2 Honors continued in Somos 1 Unit 3, learned about piropos, and got to hear one of my favorite Selena songs El Chico del apartamento 512. Sp3/4 Honors continued reading Felipe Alou chapters 4-6 and I had two students bring in cardboard baseball gloves for extra credit. We didn't find out that we were closing for two weeks until Friday at 3p - so I had literally only 15 minutes early ushered my students out of school telling them that I would see them on Monday. It is unclear as to how we are moving forward for the next two weeks yet - virtual learning? extended spring break? but either way - I was still at school when it was announced - so I packed up my laptop and supplies in case I would need to teach remotely in the coming two weeks.

Making do with what we have! We did not go to the store at all this week because we were already too busy with school/work/practices/third trimester - but #bigfamilyperks , so we are usually stocked up with extras on hand normally. We are doing fine for now, and I'm oddly motivated to use this time to inventory the freezers and pantry and be creative about meal planning and using up what we have in the coming week. This week though - we had taco chicken wraps (homemade taco seasoning because we didn't have any pre-made packets), cinnamon-sugar banana bread muffins (used up two brown bananas), cheddar brats, hot dogs, and pasta salad, and pierogies on Lent Friday. We were gifted dinner of delicious homemade strombolis, salad, and brownie ice cream sundaes from one of Brandon's co-workers (thank you so much Joan!) and for Pi day on Saturday, I made Johnny Cash's Mom's pineapple pie with homemade pie crust - my first time making pie crust!

A peek into what it is like to live in our home just this minute.

Intentional Outdoor Hours:  10+ hours (of 1000)
With no new hours to report. I was cranky third trimester pregnant this week and did a lot of laying on my left side and sleeping. Kids are still whopping me in outdoor time, so at least for that!

Reading and finishing The Toll by Neal Shusterman. I loved the series but also relieved to be out of that world. hahaha, it had me really sucked in and I was thinking about it all the time. Now, I'm (finally) finishing our Books & Brews book club choice, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. The book is particularly poignant with the news of Nate Woods - another innocent man executed in Alabama - just this week. So very heartbreaking and awful that we live in a world that this has ever happened (let alone still happens).

Nesting big time. We reorganized the boys' room to fit the crib and a new dresser that Rust & baby bro will share. We swapped out the girls' dressers for two new ones (thank you Fiores!) and organized all the baby clothes/bedding/blankies. I washed sneakers this week, Brandon cleaned the fridge, the kids helped move furniture in the living room to fit the baby's swing, and we all ripped and tore through the playroom to get it cleaned out (and purged of broken stuff!) Rust and Violet organized books and toys that would be good for the baby too. We are all starting to get pretty antsy to meet this little dude.

Chopping hair for Gem, Violet, and Rust. They all needed a clean up and on Sunday evening I had enough energy to spare to cart them all together. We were lucky to get a slot that they could all simultaneously get their hair cut! Gem got 9inches cut off to donate to Wigs for Kids with Hairloss. She looks so cute and fresh with her new 'do. Violet got a sweet little bob that looks so adorable I can't take it - really highlights her dimples. Rust man looks like a full grown kid and loves to be called "Little Grey" now.

Registering the Peanut for Kindergarten! She is excited and the big kids are happy to give her regular reminders of how school will be next year. ("You'll ride the bus with us!" "You will get to have specials like Steam with Mrs. Roxby!" "You're going to have to do homework just like us every night!")

Checking tasks off my 'before maternity leave' to do at school list. We had next year's requistions due this week, I caught up on a bunch of grading, and added a few more copied plans and information to my long term substitute maternity binder. Prom Committee is knocking things off our master list (prom week dress up ideas! Prom tshirt designs!) and Spanish club is starting to close out our last month together (plans for our last elem visit! Project Treedom tshirt designs!) It feels overwhelming some days, but with each thing checked off the list - I feel more and more at ease.

Frustrated about this naughty baby. We had another ultrasound this week and my placenta is still low lying and the cord is still in the way of the exit. That means it is twice a week Non-Stress Tests for us from here on out with the addition of weekly visits now at 34 weeks. I'm feeling so low and heavy in the front and just plain miserable. My apologies to anyone who has to personally deal with me because I am no peach at the end of pregnancy - this is my very least favorite part because my body is like it's not even my own and does nothing like I need/want it to. It's all very frustrating and I'm just ready for it to be over. Give me this baby in my arms and my body back to me, please.

Laughing about Violet and her independent tooth puller policy. Daddy is our Chief of Loose Teeth, but Violet is adamant about pulling it out herself. Her little bottom tooth is so loose it's practically horizontal!

Grateful for family who leans in when we need them as I waddle through these last few weeks. Abba and Chum helped us move, relocate, and organize all the furniture as we figured out how to get new baby brother's equipment in the boys' room! Aunt Uch grabbed Grey from basketball practice Monday night while B attended a football board meeting and I took the little three with me to file our taxes. Pappy took Gem to her first BB gun league shoot while B took Grey to a basketball game. Aunt Kitty came over to visit on Thursday evening and brought pizza for dinner and then gave the babies a bath while I took a nap after school (I love you!) Kuma, Mimi, and Morgan took Gem out for a pedicure and then met our Garretson cousins at Pizza Hut for a fun surprise dinner! And Aunt Uch picked up the girls and took them to a bridal shower on Friday while I was at my NST so that we didn't all have to walk in late

Ordering a new vacuum cleaner because ours officially died this week. It was time, but still frustrating to have to make a purchase and living in a house of 6 humans and two dogs at the start of spring, there's no way around it.

Day dating at my students' boys' basketball game in the state playoffs. They won! After the game, B and I ate far too much at Woodside Grill, but it was delicious and uninterrupted by kids, so, ya know- hah. Thank you Miss Hannah for babysitting in the kiddos!

Visiting with the Vorndrans on Saturday night at our house. So good to see them and catch up - but most of all to see the kiddos all together. The girls adore Claire while Rust and Caleb marched around the house talking about hilarious things and using every nerf gun in our house. We love you!

College'ing by reading a bunch of articles and getting to work on the first draft of my research paper. So much citation, sweet Lord.

Spring Sporting with two indoor baseball practices this week! Grey and Gem are both shooting in a BB gun league and it was the first shoot this week!

Winter sporting with the last week of basketball (outside of weekend tournaments!) Grey had two Storm practices and 3 games this week including a playoff game that they won on Saturday evening!

Teaching chapters 5-7 of Brandon Brown in Spanish1 including a dictation quiz and small group oral presentations. Spanish 2 worked through chapters 5-7 in Esperanza while Spanish2 Honors started Somos 1 Unit 13 about piropos. Spanish3/4 started reading Felipe Alou chapters 1-4, took a vocab quiz, and we made Morir Soñando slushies in class.

Making Walmart chicken tenders (pre-made!) with mashed potatoes, sloppy joes, chicken/veggie/stuffing casserole, pulled pork in the crockpot, and frozen pizzas.

A glimpse into what it is like to live in our home just this minute.

Intentional Outdoor Hours:  10+ hours (of 1000)
During a horrible bout of Braxton hicks on Sunday I found that walking up and down our driveway for an hour while reading somehow was the only thing that could help me (LOL). So score for outdoor hours, but also -ugh.

Reading and finishing Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman and then immediately borrowing the third and final book in the series, The Toll by Neal Shusterman from our English teacher and my dear friend Renee. The world in this series is so well written and I'm so immersed - I must get out. Hahhaha, I told her, I just need to finish this one so I can leave this world and be back in reality. I also recently saw this meme and laughed for a hundred hours and sent it to my book loving soulmate, Taryn.

Image result for reading is basically staring at a dead tree and hallucinating

Slowing down in the classroom because holy moly, teaching in the third trimester is no joke. Whew, I made it to the 33 week mark until I am finally feeling like, How the heck am I supposed to be doing this? I really struggled this week with a lot of painful braxton hicks, heartburn, and total body slowdown. I had full intentions of going to Sunday school and at the last minute (literally - my shoes were on!) I looked at Brandon with panic and said, "I can't go. I have to lay down." Luckily Miss Hannah covered my class (thank you!) then later that same day, I was putting my shoes on to go to Grey's championship bball game and again, I started crying because I knew I just wasn't going to be able to do it. So I missed the 'ship - luckily I was getting play-by-play updates and videos from Becky (thank you!) and I still felt like I was there. I mustered through school on Tuesday (my classroom neighbors kept checking on me, they were concerned!) but after a long Epsom salt bath and going to sleep by 9p that night, I felt a lot better. I just need to slow down -as much as I despise it- and take these last few weeks with a grain of salt. Come on, baby bro - we can do this!

Starting Lent with our annual countdown charts (the kids love these!) and attending Ash Wednesday mass (which was also one of my 100 small things tasks for February). I took the three youngest because B and Grey had baseball practice and a basketball game.

Finishing - just in time to close out February! - our family puzzle. It was a scene of a campfire and canoe near a lake and now we're all itching for summer to get here so we can go camping!

Playing balloon volleyball in the living room to combat the cabin fever. Come on weather, either be real winter with real snow that we can play in or just be spring - this in between muddy, too cold, sloppy mess is ridiculous.

College'ing by writing a Parent Conference Plan paper (2-3 pgs with in-cite references and a reference page) in between pacing back and forth and breathing deliberately thanks to a very hard baby day on Sunday. I also printed off several articles I need to read for my research paper due in April, but I have a few weeks now that I can get started on it so I'm not backed into a corner when this new baby bro arrives.

Spring Sporting with one baseball practice this week and a final decision to move up to the next level in baseball (a sigh and an eye roll from this momma).

...and even a little fall sporting (!!?!) Brandon is the football board VP, so he attended the league-wide planning meeting on Friday night....because this is how far in advance youth sports organize and prepare. Friendly reminder: thank your youth sports league boards, coaches, and volunteers. k, thanks, bye.

Winter Sporting with two basketball games and two basketball practices. Grey's CT team finished in second place in their league and they had a little end of season party at their final practice (thanks Coach Dan & Team Mom Becky!).  Grey's Storm team games are still going for one more week and then he has some tournaments on the horizon for March.

Teaching almost all week except for the 2hr delay on Thursday - still NO snow days all winter (?!) In Sp1 we read chapters 2-4 of our novel Brandon Brown Quiere un Perro including the ever popular lesson on animal sounds in Spanish using this video. Sp2 worked through chapters 3-4 of Esperanza while Sp2 Honors watched Under the Same Moon and were obsesssssssed with it. It is a good movie and we finally finished out our immigration unit for them. Sp 3/4 Honors did some pre-work about Dominican Republic and the Trujillo regime to get ready to read their next novel about Felipe Alou next week. I gave out half way Q3 Leave Me Alone Passes this week and helped judge chili cook-off that our FCS students put on. Spanish club had their elementary school visit on Friday too (they taught about days of the week!)

Making berry smoothies for breakfast on Sunday (yum!) and ham&cheese texas toast melt sandwiches for dinner. We had a two nights of fridge clean outs, including the kids' favorite 'buffet & order' because we had to get rid of some major leftovers. We had taco salads and quick King's cake to celebrate Mardi Gras (I just use canned cinnamon rolls!) We were gifted delicious chicken alfredo fettucine from Joan who works with Brandon in the admin building (thank you so so much!) and dessert of gob cake which was divine. Gem made some muffins from mix on Saturday morning while I made crockpot potato soup. All week we gorged ourselves on girls scout cookies because...tis the season!
