Practices, games, practices, games, practices, games, practices, games...
Reading Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (a borrow from my student Kyra) and absolutely loving it. Eeeeeek, cannot wait to watch the movie on Prime as soon as I'm done!
Thanking our neighbor/the kids' resource officer Mr. Mike on 9/11 and having my students write thank you cards to our high school resource officer Mr. Schmidt who are both retired state police officers and first responders at the site of the Flight 93 crash in 2001.
Getting hit with sickness this week. We each passed around a bout of Herpangina which is high fever and blister-like sores in the mouth and throat. We have absolutely no personal space in this house, so generally when one of us gets a contagious illness; we can all expect to get hit. This one was pretty awful (very painful swallowing/drinking/eating) but we got through it mostly in just a week and a half.
Attending elementary school open house and visiting with Violet & Rusty's teachers. Always a nice evening chatting with teachers and other parents. And it's kid-free, so I walk through the halls admiring student work with my hands free (hah! imagine!)
Upgrading our washer/dryer when our dryer decided to pass away on Sunday night around 9:30p. B and I fashioned up some makeshift clotheslines all over the back porch and blacktop to try to get 2 loads of laundry hung up, it may or may not have included using the tractor bucket to hold the line up to keep from sagging (LOL forever)
Logistically working out where everyone will be at the end of every school day which is a feat each week. During football season, all four kids have been staying at the high school for some amount of time while I try to rush home and relieve Miss Emma. Sometimes I try to figure out the least amount of driving I can do in the afternoon between pick-ups and practices/games. A heartfelt thank you to Miss Jenilee and Tanner for being there for the kiddos after school and helping with homework. And another thank you to the Cable family who had Rust and Vi get off the bus there on their half day early dismissal this week. Parents of young children - sending my love to you as you juggle all these schedules and trying to figure out who is caring for your little wildlings at all the moments!
Worried about Reddy at the youth football game. After 5 hours of playing at the games, he slipped playing catch and his head fell back right on a rock and busted open. I was cheer coaching and so Brandon was the first to get to him (along with a bunch of concerned fans) and sweet little Veda Volocko came over to me and said, "Red hit his head and it's bleeding." I said, "Okay, does his Daddy know?" and she said, "Yeah, but it's bleeding a lot and I bet he wants you." (the sweetest girl!) She took me over to him and he definitely did want me and I went into crisis mode (the blood was running down his back!) and we marched over to the ambulance and they got him cleaned up and I got him calmed down. It turned out to be fine (I mean big slice and a lot of blood but head injuries be like that). The paramedics told me to watch out for him being particularly tired and I was like, "um - he's been playing and running in the sun for the last 6 hours...so?" HAH. Just some standard momma worry for the.rest.of.the.day - but he was good and I am so grateful for all the people who huddled in immediately to get him help, especially to sweet Veda who made sure he had his momma.
Teaching during Homecoming week! Spanish 1 practiced colors/days of the week before their first vocab quiz of the year and then learned two super 7 verbs: Le gusta and Hay. Spanish 2 watched Canela to close out their food unit. Spanish 3/4 continued learning about La Guerra Sucia and Las Abuelas de la Plaza Mayo. We had dress up days for homecoming and then on Friday we had our huge pep rally which was amazing (like always!) The hoco court do little dance skits and there are competitions and games, the band and drum line get everyone pumped, and the entire high school and elementary school are so engaged. The elementary school teachers do a dance and so do the high school teachers and we killed our performance! I took the littlest four kids (and Vi's friend Evaley) to my students' homecoming game since Brandon's team played so far away. We made it to the parade and scored a ton of candy and then stayed at the game until homecoming to hear them announce two of my fav kids as hoco king & queen (congrats Grant & Molly!) It was a great week (#lovemykids #lovemyjob ) and if you're interested in seeing a Homecoming highlight hype video - check out this one from my student Brandon.
Sporting and if it looks like we spend more time at a football stadium than our home...well, that's kind of true right now in our life, but no one is complaining because we are family of meatheads apparently. Rusty had two flag practices, Violet and Gemma had one cheer practice each and Gem also had two soccer practices. The youth league had two games this week (Sunday at Portage and then again on Saturday at CV). Grey had two baseball lifts. three days of football practice, and a home game vs. Penns Manor on Thursday (they are still undefeated!) Brandon had team dinner & film on Sunday, four days of practice and then a game all the way out in West Shamokin on Friday night. B and his team also attended the Band Showcase in their jerseys to watch them perform in their competition. The band is always there for our team (rain or shine, win or lose) and the football team was proud to be there for them this time!
Making bbq pineapple chicken bake (5D1H, kids loved it! I even got a "mom, this is bussa bussin" from our almost 9 year old), sheet pan kielbasa & gnocchi (5D1H), spinach & artichoke chicken bake (5D1H), meatball sub sammies, and take-out pizza from Uch and the boys (thank you!!).
